"Famines have never materialized in any country that is independent" having freedom of speech and competition for leadership of the nation, will lead to a better functioning country. If there is no competition allowed or criticism of the nation could lead to inprisonment or death, then the country cannot develop and work more efficiently for the whole and the quality of life will atrophy with it.
